How many people do you think are trying to conceive right now in America? Having a baby seems like the simplest thing someone can do, but sometimes getting pregnant and carrying to term is easier said than done. According to the CDC, over seven million women in the country have sought out help for fertility issues. When you're having trouble conceiving, your first thought is to seek out a reputable fertility clinic or doctor.
Though there are plenty of clinics and doctors available, it can be hard to find one you feel comfortable with. Fertility doctors require a special kind of demeanor that puts patients at ease, and sometimes they may be more concerned about preserving your feelings than telling you what you need to hear. If your fertility doctor or specialist were 100% honest, you might hear them utter a few of these phrases. "You may not even need my services" How long do you think it takes for a couple that's trying to conceive to get pregnant? A few weeks, or maybe about the time for two menstrual cycles to pass? This may seem shocking but, on average, it can take a couple anywhere from six months to a year to become pregnant. Since some people think that pregnancy happens almost instantaneously, they assume that they're having fertility problems before even giving themselves time to get pregnant. If you've been trying for twelve months with no success, it's time to consult a health professional. If not, just keep trying! "You need to lose weight before we can start." Weight is a highly sensitive topic in the health community, and for good reason. Being overweight or obese can cause a variety of health problems, but not everyone is aware that it can affect your ability to conceive. Furthermore, weight problems can affect the fertility of both sexes, and even the most advanced treatments might not work if both parents aren't healthy. Unfortunately, because weight is such a charged topic with patients and doctors, some health professionals are reluctant to mention weight to their patients. If you want to conceive and save your doctor from having an embarrassing conversation, be sure to be at a healthy weight before starting fertility treatments. "You're going to be seeing me for a while." Fertility is complicated, and even though medical science has made leaps and bounds in recent years, there are still a lot of unknown variables that affect your ability to conceive. If you're having problems conceiving, don't expect a quick and easy fix. Your doctor may want to try a few things before they try medications, hormones, advanced fertility treatments, or IVF. They may recommend that you take break from trying to conceive. You may have to go into IVF multiple times before you carry to term. Anything could happen, so be prepared to be patient. A responsible fertility doctor will have the right combination of empathy and honesty. Always look for someone who will do their best to help you, while not being afraid to express some uncomfortable realities.
